Happy June, Time Bank!

When I look at the timebanking software on the Hourworld page, I see a lot of requests and offers for help with gardening. What a great way to get outside with our friends and neighbors, whether you are asking for help with a gardening task or helping other time bankers. Or maybe both! It's easier and more fun to work together.

Who is writing this newsletter, anyway?

We have had some changes in leadership this year. Heather Daniel Waltz, Heidi Weisel, and Kim Mosyjowski are taking a well-earned break from the board. However, they are still actively involved with leadership as they now (with Sheri Resnik) are the Crooked River Alliance of Time Banks (CRAT) board. CRAT is the parent group of KCTB.

For day-to-day running the Time Bank, we have:

Matt Smith, secretary

DJ Smith, treasurer

and Carol Grzeschik.

If you are interested in visiting a board meeting to see what we do, please reach out to one of us for an invitation.

We have two standard monthly events, in addition to extra activities on an ad hoc basis through the year. Every month, we have a community pot luck on the second Friday of the month where we bring food to share with each other. We also have a craft night on the last Thursday where we work together, laugh, and share our skills. We find that more people respond to requests when they know each other, so come out to these events and socialize with fellow timebankers.

If you have yet to formally join our community, we also have orientations on the third Sunday of most months. While many events are open to non-members, you have to attend an orientation and formally join in order to participate in exchanging services through timebanking itself. So if you haven't joined us yet, please do so soon!

Every year, we have a table at the street festival where we create magic potion bottles for kids (or adults if they ask nicely; we won't judge.) This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, where we make much of our annual budget. It's fun and productive. We need a lot of volunteers to make this work, so please consider giving us a few hours.

TimeBank Summer Picnic

Saturday, August 23, 2025 3:00pm to evening, Fred Fuller Park ~ Shelter 4601 Middlebury Road, Kent, OH 

We will have a basket raffle, lawn games, giant jenga, face painting, water balloons, picnic food, and whatever wonderful dishes you choose to bring.

Please consider putting together a basket to contribute to this occasion. You may take time credits for your time to complete the basket and the cost of supplies. Please email Pati Wagner at  pwagner712@gmail.com to let her know to expect your contribution. The baskets can be brought to the picnic, or dropped off at Pati's house the day before on August 22. We also need two volunteers to help the day of the picnic, so please raise your hand if you can do that.

Some ideas for baskets might be cookies or other baked goods; hand-made items; a carefully curated selection of toys or tools or figurines; or whatever appeals to interests you think you might share with other timebankers.

Board Bios

Dawn:gDawn grew up in this area but lived most of her adult life in the Boston area. She recently moved back here to be closer to family. She has only been a member of the Time Bank since 2022, so she looks forward to meeting more of you. She is a semi-retired data scientist who writes, reads tarot cards, and does millions of different types of crafts.

Matt: My name is Matt Smith. Yes, like that Matt Smith, but no, not that Matt Smith. I prefer he/him/his. I’m a late 30s husband and dad, happily raising three kids in Kent. I’m currently employed by Kent State, like half of the folks in Portage. I’m working on a bachelor’s in computer science, and I earned an associate’s in technical writing in 2007.

I do not like piña coladas or getting caught in the rain. I do like D&D, bicycles and bike wrenching, and PCs and PC gaming, though.

DJ: With 17 years of experience volunteering across various nonprofit organizations, DJ Smith is dedicated to community engagement and service. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Kent State University and has been a passionate TimeBank member since 2010.

As the mother of Jagger, who shares her involvement in the TimeBank, DJ has built meaningful connections within her community—including her honorary son Nate and his spouse Matt—who are also members. Her participation in the TimeBank has enriched her life, allowing her to forge friendships, meet neighbors, and become an active part of her community.

Since joining the board of the TimeBank in 2021, DJ has worked diligently to organize financial records, streamline transaction processes, and implement detailed reporting systems—enhancing the organization’s efficiency and transparency.

Carol: some of you may know me as Carol Grz. That’s how I go on Facebook. It’s so much easier than Grzeschik. I’m originally from UCLA ( upper Canton - lower Akron) also known as Green. I lived there most of my life. My now grown daughter and I both graduated from there. I have my BAs in Business Management and in Marketing from Walsh University in Canton.

I’ve been a member of the time bank since 2013. Though I now live out by Lake Milton, I still enjoy being active with this wonderful organization.
